How do you cross out text where there is no strikethrough button?
Most social fields, bios and chat boxes do not offer strikethrough or underline because they store only plain text. This tool adds the line with special combining characters. A combining character has no width of its own: it attaches to the letter before it and draws a mark over it. Because the mark is a real character, it travels with the text when you copy and paste.
For strikethrough the tool adds U+0336, a long stroke that runs through the middle of the letter. For underline it adds U+0332, a low line under the letter. One mark is added after every character except spaces.
Strikethrough or underline: which one fits?
The two styles are made the same way but are used differently:
- Strikethrough is for the crossed-out joke or correction, a price that changed, a done item on a list, or a thought you take back with a wink.
- Underline is for emphasis on a word or a short phrase where bold or italic is not available.
Does it work with Turkish letters and other accents?
Yes. The line is a mark attached to each character, not a different alphabet, so it works on ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş, ü and İ as well as the basic letters. This is the one place where Turkish text is handled better than in the bold or italic styles, which have no versions of those letters.
The result still depends on the font. Some fonts draw the line slightly higher, lower or shifted compared with the letters, and on some devices the marks of neighboring letters do not join into one smooth line. Check the preview where you will publish.
What are the limits of crossed-out Unicode text?
Every mark is an extra character, so a ten-letter word becomes about twenty characters. On X each mark is counted too, so check the length with the character counter before you post. Some apps ignore combining marks and show plain text, and some cut them off at a length limit.
Screen readers may read the marks aloud or skip the text, and a crossed-out word may not match a search for the plain word. Keep names, links and key information plain and use the effect on a word or a short phrase. For a heavier emphasis, see the bold text generator.

Frequently asked questions
How do I cross out text?
Type your text, click the copy button next to the strikethrough row, and paste it into a bio, caption, comment or message. Nothing needs to be installed.
How does the line get added to the letters?
The tool adds a combining character after each non-space character: U+0336 for strikethrough and U+0332 for underline. The mark attaches to the letter before it.
Does strikethrough work with Turkish letters?
Yes. The mark attaches to any character, so ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş, ü and İ are crossed out like the others.
Why does the line look offset in some apps?
The line is drawn by the font of the app showing the text. Some fonts place the mark a little higher or lower, or leave small gaps between letters.
Do the lines count toward the character limit?
Yes. Each mark is a separate character, and X counts it too. Crossed-out text uses roughly twice the characters of the plain version.
Is this strikethrough generator free, and is my text stored?
It is free and needs no account. The conversion runs in your browser and your text is never sent to a server.
