How to make money on X in 2026: Original Content Rewards and other ways

xVirals · Updated · 11 min read

X changed how it pays creators this year. The old Creator Revenue Sharing program is closed and Original Content Rewards replaced it, with different rules about who qualifies, what is paid for and what is excluded. This guide is based on X's own help pages, read on 24 October 2026. It covers the checklist to apply, the content X will not pay for, how payouts work, and the ways to earn from X that do not depend on any payout program. X does not publish what it pays per impression, so you will not find an earnings estimate here.

What happened to Creator Revenue Sharing

Creator Revenue Sharing was X's first payout program for creators. According to X's help center, it closed to new sign-ups on 7 August 2026 and was retired on 7 September 2026. The last payouts went out on 14 August, 28 August and around 11 September. Its entry bar was an X Premium subscription, 5 million organic impressions in the previous three months and 500 verified followers.

From 8 September 2026, members of the old program could apply to its replacement, Original Content Rewards, from Creator Studio. If you were never in the old program you apply the same way, as long as you meet the new requirements below.

How Original Content Rewards works

Original Content Rewards pays creators for original, high-quality content in any format: posts, Articles, video and images that reflect your own voice, expertise or creativity.

The payment is based on qualified impressions. A qualified impression is a unique impression from an X Premium user (Premium Basic, Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business) in the Home timeline, counted when at least 50% of your post is visible. X does not count repeat impressions of the same post by the same account, or impressions that are paid for, promoted, artificial or fake.

Commentary counts. X says that interpreting the news from your own point of view or adding context to a story is original content. Reposting the news the way everyone else reports it is not.

Eligibility checklist: can you apply?

X lists these requirements. You need all of them, and meeting them does not guarantee approval because each application is reviewed.

To apply, open Creator Studio and choose Original Content Rewards. Check your own impression and follower numbers against the list first, because your account has to meet every line.

What X will not pay for

The help page names several kinds of content that are not eligible. Posting them can also put your standing in the program at risk.

  • Copied content. Someone else's post, video or image presented as yours.
  • Minimally modified content. A few changed words, a filter, a speed change or text laid over someone else's work is still not original.
  • Aggregated content. Compilations of other people's material.
  • Cross-platform reposts. Moving someone else's content from another platform onto X.
  • Content created or posted using automated means. Auto-generated and auto-posted accounts are outside the program.
  • Content that is mainly about making money. Monetization coaching and “how I make money” talk do not count as the original content X pays for.
  • Inappropriate or explicit content, misinformation, and content that breaks X's rules. A post that receives a helpful Community Note is also excluded.

X also sets conduct rules for as long as you are in the program. Keep your subscription active and keep posting original content. Do not use bots or automated tools to generate likes, follows, views or replies, and do not constantly ask people to like, repost or follow. Do not try to game the program or the algorithm. Since 3 March 2026, posting an AI-generated video about an armed conflict without saying it is AI-generated gets a 90-day suspension, and a repeat is permanent.

How and when you get paid

Payouts are made every two weeks and the minimum is $30. In the US they are paid through X Money. Outside the US, including Turkey, you set up a Stripe payout account and complete Stripe's identity verification.

X does not publish a rate per 1,000 impressions or any formula you can plug your numbers into. Any article that gives you a figure per million impressions is guessing. Plan around the requirements and the rules, not around a promised amount.

What original content looks like in practice

The program rewards your own angle. A post that reacts to a piece of news with your professional experience is original in a way a rewritten headline is not. These are generic examples written for this guide, not real posts.

Other ways to earn from X without a payout program

Payouts are one option, and a conditional one. Most people who earn through X do it indirectly: the audience is the asset, and the income comes from what you offer it. None of these come with a guaranteed result, and which ones are open to you depends on your country and your skills.

  • Sell your own service. Freelance design, development, copywriting, consulting or coaching in your field. Posts that show how you think are your portfolio.
  • Sell your own product. A template, a course, a small tool or a guide. Your followers are the first people who see it.
  • Sponsorships and brand work. Companies pay creators in their niche to mention a product. Agree the terms in writing and disclose paid partnerships as the platform and the law require.
  • Affiliate links. You earn a commission when someone buys through your link. Say that it is an affiliate link, and recommend only what you actually use.
  • Ghostwriting and freelance writing for others. Founders and executives often want to be active on X but do not have time. Writing their posts is a service that does not depend on your own follower count.
  • Paid subscriptions. X has offered ways for creators to charge followers for subscriber-only content. Availability and terms change by country, so check X's help center for what is open to you before building a plan around it.

Using AI without breaking the rules

Original Content Rewards excludes content “created or posted using automated means”. An account that generates and publishes posts on its own is outside the program. That does not mean every tool is off limits, but it tells you where the line is: the ideas, the perspective and the decision to publish need to be yours.

A practical approach is to use AI as a drafting aid. Let it suggest an angle or tighten a rough paragraph, then rewrite it with your own experience, edit it until it sounds like you, and post it yourself. xVirals works this way: it learns your style from your own public posts and writes drafts in your voice, but it never posts for you. We do not claim that content drafted with any tool, ours included, qualifies. That is X's decision, per account.

✓ Inside the line

  • AI suggests an angle or tightens a rough draft
  • You add your own experience and opinion
  • You edit until it sounds like you
  • You decide what to post and post it yourself

✕ Outside the line

  • An account that writes and publishes posts on its own
  • Bots or tools that generate likes, follows, views or replies
  • Rewording someone else's post and calling it yours
  • Constantly asking people to like, repost or follow

Before you apply: get the basics right

Free tools cannot give you impressions, but they remove friction while you build the habit of posting original content.

  • Make your profile say who you write for and why to follow you. The bio generator writes bios that fit within the limit.
  • Turn a longer thought into a thread with the thread generator instead of cutting it by hand.
  • Check every post against 280 characters with the character counter, which counts links and emoji the way X does.

Frequently asked questions

How many followers do I need to make money on X?

To apply for Original Content Rewards you need at least 500 verified followers, plus at least 500,000 Home timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days and an active X Premium subscription. Meeting the numbers does not guarantee approval.

Does Turkey qualify for X's payouts?

Yes. Turkey is on the list of countries where Original Content Rewards is available. Outside the US, payouts go to a Stripe account, and Stripe requires identity verification.

How much does X pay per 1,000 impressions?

X does not publish it. There is no official rate, so any figure you see online is an estimate. Payments are based on qualified impressions, and X sets the amount.

Do replies count toward the requirements?

No. For the 500,000 impressions requirement, impressions on your replies do not count. Original Content Rewards is also about original posts, Articles, video and images, not replies.

Do I need X Premium to earn from X?

For the payout program, yes: you need an active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription. You can still earn from X without Premium by selling services or products, affiliate links and sponsorships, since those do not pay through X.

Can AI-written content earn money on X?

X excludes content created or posted using automated means from Original Content Rewards. Using AI as a drafting aid that you then rewrite with your own perspective and post yourself is different from automating accounts, but X decides eligibility case by case. No tool can promise that its output qualifies.
