X (Twitter) limits in 2026
xVirals · Updated · 10 min read
X caps what an account can do each day: how many direct messages you can send, how many people you can follow, how many posts and replies you can publish. The numbers are scattered across several help pages and some sources online still quote old ones. This guide collects what X's own Help Center says, read on 25 October 2026, and is just as clear about what X leaves out. Limits can be lowered temporarily when the site is busy, so treat every number as the current rule, not a promise.
What are the X (Twitter) limits in 2026?
X says it applies limits to account actions "for the sake of reliability": they reduce strain on the systems behind the app and cut down on downtime and error pages. The limits below are listed on X's "About X limits" page, with the follow and character rules coming from other help pages.
One detail that surprises people: the limits include everything you do from any device, including web, mobile, phone and the API. If you use several third-party apps with the same account, their API requests all count against the same hourly API limit, so you reach it sooner.

How many posts can you make on X per day?
For unverified accounts, X's limits page lists 50 original posts and 200 replies per day. It adds that the daily limit is "further broken down into smaller limits for semi-hourly intervals", so you can be stopped before you reach the daily total if you publish a lot in a short burst.
The same page also mentions a post limit of 2,400 updates per day in its "what happens if I hit a limit" section. It doesn't explain how that figure relates to the 50 and 200 above, and it doesn't say what applies to verified or Premium accounts. We're not going to guess: if you post in volume, check the error message you get, because X says it tells you which limit you hit.
In practice, almost no normal account gets near 50 original posts a day. The limit matters for people running several scheduled accounts or tools that post in bulk. X's authenticity rules also prohibit posting content in a bulk, duplicative, irrelevant or unsolicited manner, which is a separate rule from these technical caps.
What is the Twitter DM limit?
X lists 500 direct messages sent per day. That counts messages you send, not messages you receive. Like all the limits on this page, it is shared across every device and app you use.
X doesn't publish an hourly DM limit or a separate figure for sending to people who don't follow you. If your messages start failing before 500, you may have hit a limit X doesn't document, or your account may be restricted. Slow down, send to people you actually know or who have written to you, and avoid pasting the same message to many people.
What is the Twitter follow limit?
Every X account can follow up to 400 accounts per day, according to both the limits page and the dedicated following page. There's no cap on how many accounts you can follow in total, but there is a ratio limit: once you follow 5,000 accounts, X may make you wait until you have more followers before you can follow more. The number is different for every account and X calculates it automatically from your followers-to-following ratio.
When you hit a limit you may see "You are unable to follow more people at this time." X gives four reasons for that message, and they are worth telling apart because the fix is different for each.
✓ Stays inside X's rules
- Follow accounts you actually want in your feed
- Spread follows over days instead of one sitting
- Unfollow only when you no longer want the account
✕ Breaks X's rules
- Follow churn: following then unfollowing large numbers to inflate your follower count
- Indiscriminate following of many unrelated accounts in a short time, especially by automation
- Copying another account's followers with automation
- Using or promoting third-party services that claim to add followers
| Why you can't follow | What X says to do |
|---|---|
| Daily follow limit reached | Follow more after a day has passed. |
| Followed too many accounts too quickly | Try again in an hour or so. |
| Follow ratio limit | Wait until you have more followers, or unfollow a few accounts first. |
| Account locked or limited | Resolve the lock; locked accounts can't follow. This can follow aggressive follow behaviour. |
X's rules prohibit the behaviours in the right-hand column, and violations can lead to account suspension. For growth that doesn't depend on follow tricks, see our guide to getting more followers on X.
What are the character limits on X?
A normal post is 280 characters. X Premium subscribers can write a longer post of up to 25,000 characters, including in a quote or reply, with bold and italics. X notes that longer posts can't be scheduled yet. When you pass 280 characters, the circle indicator in the composer switches from showing progress to filling.
Profile fields have their own limits: a username can be at most 15 characters and only letters, numbers and underscores; the display name can be up to 50; the bio up to 160. Poll options take up to 25 characters each, and a poll runs from 5 minutes to 7 days. How links, emoji and other scripts are counted is a separate topic; it's all in our character limit guide, and you can test a draft in the character counter.
Twitter character counterCounts your post the way X does — links as 23, emoji and CJK as 2 — against the 280-character limit and the 25,000 limit for X Premium.Try it free →How long can you edit or undo a post?
With X Premium (or a Plus, Premium, Super or Ultra plan on The X Subscription), you get a 1 hour window after publishing an original post or a quote, with up to 5 edits. You must edit from the same device you sent it from, and edited posts carry a label and a visible history.
Some posts can't be edited at all: threads, replies, promoted posts, polls, pinned posts, posts from a third-party service, posts via X Pro and subscriber posts. A separate Undo post setting delays publishing by 5, 10, 20, 30 or 60 seconds, so you can catch a typo before the post goes public.
- 0 sYou tap Post. If Undo post is on, you can still cancel for the period you chose (5, 10, 20, 30 or 60 seconds).
- Up to 1 hourPremium subscribers can edit an original post or quote, up to 5 times, from the same device.
- After 1 hourThe post is locked. Delete and repost if it has a serious error.
What happens when you hit a limit?
X shows an error message that tells you which limit you reached. For time-based limits such as DMs, posts, email changes and API requests, you can try again once the time period has passed. X suggests waiting a few hours if you hit the post limit. X also says limits may be temporarily reduced during periods of heavy site usage, in which case it posts an update on the X status site.
Don't try to get around a limit with extra accounts or tools. X's authenticity policy prohibits running multiple accounts to inflate or manipulate the prominence of content, and automation that breaks X's rules can get an account restricted. If you manage several accounts for genuinely different, non-duplicative purposes, X allows up to ten accounts.
What does X not publish?
Several numbers people search for aren't on any X page we could verify, so you won't find them here. They're likely to be quoted online with no source, so be sceptical.
- Daily post limit for verified or Premium accounts: not stated on X's limits page.
- Hourly limits for likes, reposts, replies or DMs: not stated.
- How many posts fit in a "semi-hourly interval": not stated.
- The exact follow ratio after 5,000 follows: X says it's calculated per account.
- API rate limits: X's developer documentation covers these by endpoint and plan; this guide doesn't.
