What does this word counter show?

Type or paste into the box and the counts update live: words, characters with spaces, characters without spaces, sentences and paragraphs. There is no button to press and no limit you have to stay under to see the numbers.

Below the counts you get an estimated reading time and speaking time, plus the five most repeated words of three or more letters. That last list is handy for spotting a word you lean on too much in an essay, an article or a long post.

How are reading time and speaking time calculated?

They are estimates built on two assumptions: about 200 words per minute for silent reading and about 130 words per minute for speaking aloud. Real speeds vary a lot between people, topics and languages, so treat the result as a rough guide rather than a measurement.

If you are timing a speech or a video script, read a paragraph aloud once with a stopwatch and compare. That gives you your own pace, which is more reliable than any average.

Can I check my text against X, Instagram and LinkedIn limits?

Yes. The tool shows limit bars for an X post (280 characters), an Instagram caption (2,200 characters) and a LinkedIn post (3,000 characters), plus a bar for a meta description at around 155 characters. The first three are platform limits. The 155 figure is a common guideline for search snippets, not a hard rule, because search engines decide how much to show.

X counts some things differently from a plain character count: links are shortened to a fixed length and emoji weigh more. For exact X counting, use the Twitter character counter. The guide on the X character limit explains the rules, including the longer limit for Premium accounts.

Does it work for Turkish, Chinese and other languages?

The counter uses the browser's built-in text segmentation (Intl.Segmenter), which splits words using the rules of the language instead of just looking for spaces. That matters for Turkish with its suffixes and apostrophes, and for languages such as Chinese or Japanese that do not put spaces between words.

Emoji and accented letters are counted as one character each, the way a person sees them, even when they are stored as several code points. Results can still differ slightly from a word processor or a platform's own counter, because each one has its own rules.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The counting happens in your browser with JavaScript. The text is not uploaded, stored or logged, so you can paste drafts, essays or private notes. Closing the tab clears it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count words in a text online?

Paste the text into the box above. The word count, character count, sentence count and paragraph count appear immediately and update as you edit.

What counts as a word?

A run of letters or digits separated from others by spaces or punctuation, split with the browser's language-aware segmentation. A hyphenated or apostrophe word may be counted differently by other tools, so small differences are normal.

How accurate is the reading time?

It is an estimate based on about 200 words per minute for reading and 130 for speaking. Your own pace and the difficulty of the text will change it.

How many characters can I use on X, Instagram and LinkedIn?

An X post is 280 characters (up to 25,000 with Premium), an Instagram caption 2,200 and a LinkedIn post 3,000. The limit bars show your text against the standard limits.

Is there a limit on text length?

No fixed limit is set by the tool. Very large texts depend on your browser and device, and may feel slower.

Is my text saved or uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
